Like that of a psychoanalyst, a gondolier's hour lasts fifty minutes. There is a fixed charge and you are unlikely to be able to negotiate over the price which rarely drops below 120,000 lira during the day and 150,000 lira during the night for a maximum of six people. Irrespective of the departure point, the tours on offer cover a section of the Canal Grande, the San Marco basin and a number of other smaller canals. You can choose whether to go alone or with other gondolas, perhaps with music and a singer. It is a great experience at any time of the day, but at its most evocative by night when you will discover a truly unique view of the city. All gondoliers speak some English and know a little about the art and history of Venice, but don't expect to hear them sing!! If your heart is set on the intoxicating experience of stepping on board a gondola but you don't want to spend a fortune, all you have to do is take a trip on a gondola ferry. This will carry you from one bank of the Canal Grande to the other for 600 lira. These operate only during the day and you will find the embarkation points on the map above. | ||||
